One day while coming home from work, I was in such a hurry. I
needed to get home. So many things just had to be done: more for work, no time
for family: my life was not my own. My heart was heavy, my mind confused, until
I saw a man standing near an alleyway. There wasn't anything special about him,
except the words I heard him say: "Oh, can you spare a dime, or a nickel would
be fine. I'm hungry, is there something you can spare. I maybe not well dressed
as you, still God loves me too, but you still pass me by. Is there someone who
cares? Remember whatever you do to the least of my sisters and brothers you do
for me - love one another. Oh, please don't turn away. Please hear the words I
say. Won't you take the time to notice me? Do you hear me? Do you see me? Do you
even know me?"
I stopped and went over to the man. I gave him what I could to help him from his
strife. But then he looked into my eyes and for some reason, I felt he knew me
all my life. He took my hand most gratefully and suddenly my heart was calm and
at peace. I never felt like that before and then he said these words to me:
"Thank you for taking the time to spare a nickel and a dime; for really caring
to help your fellow neighbor. God sees the things we do, but alas, there's just
a few who listen and follow the words of the Savior that whatever you do the
least of my sisters and brothers, you do for me, love one another. Like the
shepherd cares for his sheep, and so should we - our brother keep: and when we
don't, it makes the Savior cry. It only says we don't know him. That we don't
care to know him and he wants you to know him."
His words had struck a chord deep down in my soul. He made me realize where my
focus should be. Who knew that when I stopped to come over to this man, instead
of helping him, he helped me. He helped me.
He smiled a loving smile at me, took my hand and wished me peace, then turned
and walked away. And as he turned the corner, I heard a voice within me say:
"What I have told you is the truth. Like so many people, your heart was hurting
and empty. This world can't fill that void inside. Open your heart and trust in
me. My love for you is real. I know how you feel when you are hurting: don't
think that I don't care. I see everything you do. When you've fallen, I've
carried you. There is no reason to ever despair. All I ask is whatever you do to
the least of my sisters and brothers, you do for Me - love one another. That
message has never changed though some people find it strange. Will you notice Me
or pass Me by? Know that I'm there for you. I died for all for you. Know that I
love you. So will you choose Me? Do you even know Me? Do you care for Me? Do you
see Me? Do you hear Me? Do you really love Me?
